01/30/23 @ 4:15pm - 01/30/23 @ 5:15pm Community Room Winfield Public Library Youth, grades 4-8, have an opportunity to tackle the Winfield Public Library’s 2023 Reading Challenge together! To begin the new year, January's challenge is to read a "suspense/thriller." Our book club will read the Newbery Medal-winning and thrilling mystery, "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin. Monday, Jan. 9 at 4:15 pm: We distribute books and begin reading them together. Monday, Jan. 30 at 4:15 pm: We meet to discuss the book. We welcome anyone to read this book- copies are available at the library after Jan. 9 (and ANY AGE may check out and read it). Grades 4-8, we hope you'll join us for the book discussion on Jan. 30!
- Bookn' with Friends: Defending Jacob
01/30/23 @ 6:30pm - 01/30/23 @ 8:00pm Community Room Winfield Public Library The Bookn’ with Friends book club invites you to jump into WPL’s 2023 Reading Challenge with January’s book selection Defending Jacob by William Landay. Copies of the book are available to check out at the front desk, and all are welcome to join the book discussion on Monday, January 30 at 6:30pm. Chosen to meet the January 2023 Reading Challenge topic of a suspense or thriller book, Defending Jacob is a gripping legal thriller, a New York Times bestseller, and the basis of the 2020 Emmy-nominated miniseries of the same name. Published in 2012, it has a 4 star rating on goodreads, and has been described as smart, spellbinding, suspenseful, complex and gripping.
- Exhibit: A Closer Look @ Cowley Kids Data Walk
02/01/23 @ 12:00am - 02/28/23 @ 12:00am Winfield Public Library During the month of February, Winfield Public Library invites you to explore Cowley Kids Data visualizations on display throughout the library. The exhibit, provided by Legacy, RISE Cowley, and the Early Literacy Initiative, is aimed at increasing awareness of the needs of our Cowley County children. A Closer Look @ Cowley Kids explores the divide between what assumptions and the reality of what is really happening, zeroing in on kids and how poverty impacts health, education, and their potential for a successful future. Indicators with Cowley County-specific data vetted by the Kansas Health Institute have been targeted. During the month of February, Legacy plans to host a series of community conversations to further the work, the exhibit at WPL is part of that effort. Impact work will grow out of the new and collaborative work of community partners - including frontline service providers, non-profit directors, city/county/state officials, school district officials, private philanthropists and passionate community leaders. These early literacy classes build a love for books and help develop the 6 important skills children develop before they can learn to read. Classes include songs, rhymes, rhythm, and movement, plus an introduction to fun loveable books. Don't stress if you have a wiggly kid- tots are wiggly and this program is for them! 🙂 Come, relax, and enjoy making memories with your child! Offered Wednesday mornings and evenings, Jan. 25-March 29: 10:15am-10:45am and 5:15pm-5:45pm.
